The fight for the cure to breast cancer has become a part of so many lives. It has touched the lives of those close to our hearts at Bay View as well.
Only a year after her diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, Nancy Hansson, wife of Bay View implant department manager Lars Hansson, and her family will be running in the Komen Tidewater Race for the Cure as a part of team Mammary Lane.
Below is Nancy’s inspiring story of hope in overcoming a devastating disease…
“This is the first year since my diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer that my family and I are all participating in the Race for a Cure and are members of team Mammary Lane. I feel very fortunate that my cancer was caught early and I had options for my treatment. My choice was a double mastectomy. Considering my family history with breast cancer and cancer in general, it seemed like the logical choice. And in fact when cancer was found in both breasts, it was the right choice for me. I am forever grateful to my friends and community for their tremendous outpouring of love and support to me and my family throughout my treatment. There is just so much that I am thankful for.
Running this race and raising awareness and funds for this cause seems natural to me and helps me feel like I’m giving back. I am grateful everyday that my cancer was diagnosed early. My maternal grandmother lost her life at a very young age to breast cancer and her daughter and two sons never got to know their mom. In 2010 both my mom and I were diagnosed and treated for breast cancer and are doing well. I am running this race in loving memory of Isabell Johnson my grandmother, and in honor of my mom, Ginny Johnson Irwin, and my good friend Tricia Fitzgerald and in the hope that someday we will have a cure!
We Will Find the Cure! Together We Can Make A Difference!”
